Calvin Abueva, import Travis hit it off quickly in Alaska tuneup win over San Miguel

    Apr 22, 2015

CALVIN Abueva and import Romeo Travis proved they can be a lethal duo in the endgame as they led Alaska’s late-game charge in a 102-98 win over San Miguel Beer in a tuneup match on Wednesday at the Gatorade Hoops Center.

Abueva scored seven of his 11 points in the last four-and-a-half minutes while Travis added a three-pointer along with seven defensive rebounds in that same stretch to help the Aces erase an 11-point, fourth-quarter deficit.

“Iniisip ko ito munang conference (Governors Cup). Nag-struggle kasi kami last conference kaya kailangan kami makabawi,” Abueva told

Abueva also noted that Travis’ extensive overseas professional experience can augur well for an Aces side which is coming off an early quarterfinal exit in the Commissioner’s Cup.

“Makakatulong siya (Travis), saka matanda siya kaysa sa amin. Thirty-one (years old) na siya kaya beterano na siya,” added Abueva.

On the other hand, Alaska coach Alex Compton describes the left-handed Travis as a ‘smart player' who can easily fit in the Aces’ system.

“I think he’s really smart. He’s a team guy. Though we don’t really have the type of system or team that can have a guy score 50 points a night, he can fit in with the team by making good decisions,” said Compton.

Travis, a native of Akron, was a high school teammate and childhood friend of Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James.

The 220-pound Travis churned out 16 points for the Aces in his first tuneup game.
