HE was ‘Incredible Hulk’ one moment, and then ‘The Beast’ in another sequence.
But Calvin Abueva was quick to clarify that everything he did on the floor to piss off and get in import Jeffers Othyus and the rest of Barangay Ginebra players' heads was all just part of the game.
“Wala naman 'yun. It’s all part of the game,” a smiling Abueva said when asked about his antics against the Kings in Alaska’s inspiring 86-80 win on Wednesday night in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“Hindi mo maiiwasan 'yung mang-asar. Hindi mo maiiwasan 'yung maasar.”
The enigmatic power-forward put together an impressive stat lines of 17 points, nine rebounds, and four assists in 31 minutes of play, aside from getting under the skin of some Ginebra players.
In one of the most memorable parts of the game, Abueva did an ‘Incredible Hulk’ act during the second quarter after grabbing an offensive rebound and scoring underneath against Ginebra big man Greg Slaughter.
In another instance, he flexed his right muscle after making a basket against Jeffers in the second half.
But in all seriousness, Abueva was the one responsible for holding the high-scoring Jeffers to just 21 points on a miserable 7-of-25 shooting from the field.
Jeffers actually was 0-for-13 in the first half, proof of how effective Abueva was guarding him.
To all these, the Alaska stalwart out of San Sebastian said he was just doing what coach Alex Compton asked of him.
“Hindi ko na iniisip kung kelan siya (Jeffers) naka field goal. Basta kung yung depensa ko mas maganda, mas pagbubutihan ko pa,” he added.
