Calvin Abueva quick to allay injury fears after awkward slip: 'Pwede na ito bukas'

CALVIN Abueva merely overstretched his left leg that kept him out of action in the waning seconds of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinal series opener between Alaska and Meralco.

Otherwise, there’s really no serious injury to worry about for Abueva and an Aces team that’s already missing key players in the playoffs of the mid-season tournament.

“Na-stretch lang ng konti. Pahinga lang ito bukas tapos okay na ako,” said Abueva, who slipped on the Araneta Coliseum floor down the stretch in the Aces’ grind-out 97-94 win over the Bolts Monday night.

Just seconds before going down, Meralco’s Jared Dilinger also slipped on the same spot.

“Nadulas lang ako kay Jared dahil na-ano (nabasa ng pawis) niya yung floor, then sumunod ako,” said Abueva of an incident similar to the one Golden State superstar Steph Curry suffered during Game Four of the Western Conference first round playoffs against Houston.

But unlike Curry, Abueva said he’s fine.

He had the leg iced while on the bench and went out of the Alaska dugout with hardly any limp.

“Puwede na ulit ito bukas, na-stretch lang naman e,” he said.

The Aces are already a depleted unit going to the semis with big man Vic Manuel and JV Casio out with injuries.

‘The Beast’ was the second leading scorer for the Aces with 15 points, all of them in the second half, including 13 in the third period. He also had six rebounds and three assists.

The enigmatic power forwards expects the rest of the series to go down the wire just like Game One, which was not decided until the final buzzer when Ronjay Buenafe missed what could have been a game-tying three-pointer.

“Hindi naman basta-basta aatras yung mga yan e. May Game Two pa di ba? Game Three, Game Four, Game Five,” he said.

Asked if he thinks the best-of-five series will really go the full route, Abueva said he hopes it would not.

“Sana huwag ng umabot ng Game Four, mas maganda,” he said, short of saying he wants an Alaska sweep of the series.
