CALVIN Abueva will be missing a couple of games early in PBA Season 48.
The veteran forward disclosed he just underwent procedure to remove his hemorrhoids that will keep him grounded at the start of the Commissioner’s Cup.
While Abueva showed up with the rest of the Magnolia Hotshots in the PBA Media Day at Esplanade, ‘The Beast’ said he hasn’t joined the team in practice since the operation a month ago.
“One month na ngayon pero hindi pa siya ganun ka-stable. Masakit pa yung tahi. Kaya maski sa pagtakbo hirap pa ako,” said the 35-year-old former NCAA MVP.
And since he hasn’t done any physical activities yet with the team, Abueva admitted he needs to get in shape as soon as possible since he’s been way delayed as far as the Hotshots’ preparation for the season-opening conference is concerned.
Magnolia kicks off its campaign right on opening night of Nov. 5 when it battles TNT in the lone scheduled game.
“Kailangan kong mag-doble kayod for one to two weeks, or maybe three weeks para makahabol sa kanila (Hotshots),” he said.
His hemorrhoids began acting up prior to the start of practice for the 19th Asian Games and took a turn for worse when training for Gilas Pilipinas started.
“After nun, pina-check-up ko ng Saturday, Linggo ini-schedule na ako for operation,” Abueva recalled.
His eventual omission from the official Gilas roster to the Asiad, it turned out, was a blessing in disguise.
“Baka doon pa ako magkalat,” said Abueva. "At least in the end, nabunutan ako ng tinik. Pero siyempre saying yung gold. Pero (concern) pa rin yung pangangatawan natin.”
The Magnolia star said his return to active duty will depend on how fast his recovery will be.
