Calvin Abueva responds to former coach Luigi Trillo's 'jerk' comment: 'Emosyon 'yon, di ko sila binabastos'

    Mar 19, 2015

CALVIN Abueva on Thursday responded to his Luigi Trillo's comment that he acted like a 'jerk' in Alaska's double-overtime win over Meralco, saying his gestures were no more than an outpouring of emotions and in no way meant to insult his former coach or the Bolts.

The flamboyant Alaska forward said he had no idea that he had angered Trillo late in Alaska's 108-103 win over Meralco on Tuesday as he denied knowingly making a 'nganga' gesture in the direction of the Bolts bench.

'The Beast' insisted he had no intention to taunt the whole Meralco bench.

Saka emotion lang 'yun,” said Abueva. “May sari-sarili tayong ginagawa, may kanya-kanya tayong reaksyon. Emosyon 'yun eh. Mataas ang emosyon, kasi sobrang dikit ang laban, tapos nagawa naming ipanalo, crucial game pa 'yun.”

Abueva said some of the body language and gestures he does during games often come naturally, especially when emotions are running high.

“Ganito naman talaga ako eh. May kanya-kanya tayong ginagawa, like si (Beau) Belga, mayroon din siyang sariling antics. Emosyon 'yun eh.

The hard-banging former San Sebastian Stags star admitted Trillo would often scold him during their time together at Alaska for his ‘reactions and antics’ during games.

“Sinisita niya (Trillo) rin ako nun, pero sabi ko nga, may kanya-kanya tayong personalidad, may kanya-kanya tayong reaksyon sa bawat bagay na minsan di tayo aware,” he said.

Abueva said current Alaska coach Alex Compton does the same thing and even talked to him about Tuesday's incident.

Ganito ako, at ganito lang ako,” he added.

Trillo was one of Abueva's staunchest defenders during his early years in the pro ranks, although insiders said their relationship deteriorated late in Trillo's stint with the team.

There was also an incident when Trillo reportedly suspended Abueva for one game during the 2014 Commissioner’s Cup semifinals between Alaska and Rain or Shine  after the gungho forward failed to attend practice.

Abueva bared that it has been quite some time since he last talked to and exchanged text messages with Trillo.

    His message to Trillo?

"Sa court na lang ang emosyon," said the former Rookie of the Year.

Meanwhile, Ian Sangalang, Abueva’s longtime teammate and stablemate at the training camp of Pampanga vice governor Dennis Pineda, said most of Abueva's mannerisms are not meant to insult.

May iba nga nagsasabi na dapat di siya ganun, kaso style niya 'yun eh,” he said.

Despite all the controversies, Sangalang said Abueva is a very responsible man off the court.

Laging una sa kanya ang pamilya at mga kaibigan,” added the Purefoods Star Hotshots big man.

Asked if he still sees Abueva shedding his court antics, Sangalang can only laugh and shake his head.

Ganun na kasi talaga siya noon pa man eh,” he said.
