ALASKA star forward Calvin Abueva has gone under the knife early this week at the St. Luke’s Medical Center to repair abnormal growth of bone fragments on his right knee.
Abueva’s adviser, lawyer Charlie Chua, bared that the injury was not game-related but more the result of wear and tear for the hard-charging former San Sebastian star.
“Nagkaroon ng parang gasgas yung buto niya sa knee,” said Chua, chief of staff of Abueva’s agent and Pampanga vice governor Dennis Pineda.
Chua said Abueva had nursed the injury since last season and it was the reason he passed up on an invitation to join the Gilas Pilipinas pool for last year's Fiba Asia Championship in Manila.
“Yan yung dati niyang injury. Yan din yung reason why hindi siya nakasali sa Gilas last year, kung maaalala niyo,” he added.
Chua said it was famed surgeon Dr. Raul Canlas who suggested to Abueva that an operation be done to address the recurring knee injury during the lPBA offseason.
“Mahaba kasi ang bakasyon ngayon ng PBA dahil sa Fiba World Cup so ngayon na ginawa ang operasyon. Last year pa nga dapat yan eh. Kaso alanganin last time dahil sunod-sunod ang torneo,” he said.
The Angeles City-born forward is now recovering from the surgery and will immediately go to rehab and strengthening to prepare him for next season, which will kick off on October 19.
Before undergoing surgery, Abueva played for Manila North in the last Fiba 3x3 championships held at the SM Megamall last week.
