CALVIN Abueva is one of the peskiest players in the PBA, both with his play and his antics on the court.
That was seen on Wednesday during Phoenix Pulse’s 89-87 win over Magnolia when Abueva made a few attempts to distract Magnolia center and former San Sebastian teammate Ian Sangalang during the fourth quarter.
Despite his antics, Abueva said he remains focused in the game.
“Buti nagagawa ko na ‘yung gusto ko na mang-asar pero nasa focus,” said Abueva.
Abueva though said those antics are just on the court.
“Alam niyo naman kung gaano ako kakulit, gaano ako kaligalig sa court. Pero sa labas, ibang usapan. Sa court, 100 percent, 110 percent, gagawin ko ‘yung laro,” Abueva said.
Abueva has been one of the reasons for Phoenix Pulse’s rise to the top as the Fuel Masters occupy the top spot in the team standings of the Philippine Cup with an 8-1 record.
The top two teams in the elimination round will clinch a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals but Abueva made it clear the goal is just to enter the playoff round strong. Phoenix Pulse still has Barangay Ginebra and San Miguel on its schedule.
“End of elimination na eh. Patapos na ‘yung elimination. Siyempre kailangan naming i-secure ‘yung winning streak namin. Actually hindi pa namin hinahangad ‘yung top two. Hinahangad namin matapos ‘yung elimination ng maganda,” said Abueva.
