LUCENA - Calvin Abueva offered Alaska’s Game Three victory over San Miguel Beer to his son, Calvin James, who was struck with pneumonia and was still confined in hospital.
The Aces star, who had 13 points, two boards, one block, and one steal, against three turnovers, said his five-year-old son was confined in a hospital in Manila before the team's departure for this southern city.
“Natuyuan ng pawis at inuubo na,” Abueva said in a short chat with Spin.ph after the game. “So after nito, uwi agad ako at deretso hospital. Dun muna ako mag-stay.”
Aces coach Alex Compton lauded his ward for keeping his focus on the game, but said he understands Abueva’s situation.
“It was tough on him,” the Alaska coach said. “We always say family first at Alaska. I’ll always support my players when it comes to family. You always take care of your family first. He talked to his wife Sam and said he will be fine.”
“Our prayers are with him. We think he will be okay,” he added.
