ALASKA forward Calvin Abueva dodged suspension but was slapped a P20,000 fine by the Office of the Commissioner after hitting Rain or Shine guard Jonathan Uyloan in the stomach during the dying minutes of the Aces’ 91-98 loss on Christmas Day at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The fine was the first major penalty this season for 'The Beast,' who has been relatively behaved for majority of the Philippine Cup.
The forward out of San Sebastian was tossed out of the game for incurring a flagrant foul penalty 2. His ejection eventually led to the Aces’ collapse, allowing the Elasto Painters to level the series at 2-all going to Game Five on Saturday, also at the MOA Arena.
The undersized forward’s only previous penalty early in the season was a P1,000 fine for trash-talking.
Alaska coach Alex Compton said there was nothing in particular he told Abueva in practice, except that he expects the former PBA Rookie of the Year to regain his focus.
“Calvin has been great all season long and it has all originated from him,” Compton told Spin.ph after the team’s practice. “I’m sure he (Abueva) will be great again for the remaining games of the series.”
