HERE'S good news and bad news for Alaska fans.
The good news of course, revolves around the return of star forward Calvin Abueva after he was hospitalized during the All-Star break. The bad news is that big man Vic Manuel once again hurting his previously injured calf muscle.
Coach Alex Compton said Abueva is likely to play in the Aces’ PBA Governors Cup game against Rain or Shine Saturday, but Manuel remains a doubtful starter.
Abueva already joined Alaska in practice on Thursday after being released from the Cardinal Santos hospital two days ago due to fever and severe throat infection. The virus kept the 28-year-old pride of Angeles, Pampanga from suiting up for the North team in the recent All-Star game.
“I think Calvin will be okay. Not likely that Vic will play,” said Compton after the Aces concluded their practice at the Hoops gym in Mandaluyong.
Manuel has not yet been practicing with the team as he concentrates in strengthening the same right calf he strained during the playoffs of the Commissioner’s Cup, where he missed the Finals completely against Rain or Shine.
The 29-year-old native of Nueva Ecija reinjured the leg in the Aces’ 101-95 loss to the Mahindra Enforce before the All-Star break.
Compton said he has no idea on whether the injury will kept Manuel away again for a long time the way it did during the mid-season conference.
“We check him out all the time, although I really don’t want to force it,” said the Alaska mentor.
The Aces are currently in the middle of the pack with a 1-3 (win-loss) record in a tie with Star, Phoenix, NLEX, and Blackwater.
