SIX players led by Arwind Santos and Calvin Abueva along with two other personalities have been summoned by PBA commissioner Chito Salud on Sunday to air their side on several physical plays that marred Game Two of the PBA Philippine Cup Finals on Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The 6-foot-4 Santos, who ended up with a bloodied forehead after being hit by a wayward elbow courtesy of Abueva, will appear before Salud’s office at 2 p.m. together with Alaska’s Vic Manuel and Dondon Hontiveros and the San Miguel pair of Ronald Tubid and rookie David Semerad.
Also invited to appear before the Commissioner’s Office are Alaska deputy coach Louie Alas and a San Miguel ball boy.
“Kakausapin lahat yun (involved). Titingnan namin ang explanation nila sa mga pangyayari sa Game Two. Saka itong summon, non-waivable iyan kaya kailangan nilang magpakita kay Com bukas,” said league media buruea chief Willie Marcial on Saturday.
San Miguel used a vicious fourth quarter explosion to beat Alaska, 100-86, to tie the best-of-seven title series at 1-1. Game Three is scheduled on Sunday at 5 p.m.
Among the many personalities involved, Santos, Semerad, Abueva, and Manuel hogged most of the spotlight.
Santos, the one-time league MVP, engaged Abueva, a fellow Kapampangan, in a shoving match and trash talking as early as the first quarter. The 33-year-old forward from Far Eastern University eventually suffered a cut on his forehead after being hit with a wayward elbow by Abueva, who was trying to drive hard for a layup at the 6:06 mark of the third period.
On the other hand, the 6-foot-4 Semerad got involved in several skirmishes.
One sequence in the first half saw the former San Beda forward engage Abueva in a shoving incident during a rebound play as both players fell hard on the floor.
Curiously, no foul was called as the play continued.
Semerad also engaged Hontiveros in a scuffle in front of the scorer’s table just near Alaska’s bench as players from both team’s charged in to try to stop both players from engaging.
Alas and Alaska coach Alex Compton along with a referee eventually pulled Semerad and Hontiveros away.
Later in the fourth period, Semerad also got entangled with Manuel in another rebounding battled that had the Alaska forward wrapping his left arm around the San Miguel rookie’s neck.
After a careful review of the tape, Manuel was slapped with a flagrant foul penalty 1.
Alas, meantime, has been included in the summon after being caught sticking out his knee on one of the game officials (referee Gruta) during the second half, which the Alaska assistant coach said was just an accidental bump.
Meanwhile, the San Miguel ball boy was caught on TV replay hitting Abueva in the stomach during a dead ball situation that happened right in front of the Beermen’s bench.
