CALVIN Abueva allayed injury fears after a hard fall he had early in Alaska’s 123-104 win over GlobalPort on Friday in the PBA Philippine Cup.
The Aces star had an injury scare as he fell on his back after going out of control following a converted layup over Billy Mamaril, who fouled him midway through the first quarter.
But the tough guy that he is, Abueva dusted it off and scored the ensuing free throw for the three-point play.
“Pagpag lang,” said Abueva, who was hurt in the same area in a game with Gilas Pilipinas in the Jones Cup. “Konting therapy lang 'to, mawawala 'to.”
Although he was substituted after that play, Abueva returned and finished with 11 points, five boards, and three assists in 15 minutes.
“It always scares me when he goes down,” Aces coach Alex Compton said. “But he was able to steal the mutant gene from Wolverine. He takes hard falls and he throws his body around out there. He plays so hard and with reckless abandon.”
Compton, however, knew the 'Beast' isn't immune to pain.
“He’ll feel it in the morning,” the American mentor added. “But usually with his adrenaline and desire to play, what happens with Calvin, he actually gets hurt and sometimes injured…but still decides to play through it.”
