CALVIN Abueva made the most of his limited playing time on Friday to galvanize Alaska in its 101-63 crushing of Kia Carnival in the PBA Governors’ Cup.
The Aces’ energizer bunny continued to play sparingly as he nursed an assortment of injuries on his ankle, hamstring, and knee.
But nine minutes of playing was more than enough for Abueva to put up an all-around effort of 15 rebounds, eight points, and six assists against two turnovers.
The 2013 Rookie of the Year, who came in averaging just 14.3 minutes this conference, highlighted his highly efficient showing with 11 rebounds in just seven minutes of play in the first half.
To put the 6-foot-1 Abueva’s rebounding rate into perspective, 6-foot-5 Alaska import Romeo Travis grabbed 10 rebounds in 31 minutes, while Kia’s 7-foot-1 reinforcement, Hamady N’Diaye had seven boards also in 31 minutes before going out with an injury.
“I don’t know how you do that at six-one-and-a-half with a seven-foot-one import (as an opponent), but I thought that was phenomenal,” Aces coach Alex Compton said. “His energy also came in and helped boost us up.”
Abueva managed to register all his stats despite playing just two minutes in the second half as he was all over the floor, one instance even leading to poking the eye of N’Diaye.
