CALVIN Abueva once again broke the hearts of Ginebra and its legion of fans as Alaska scored a 97-83 win for its third straight victory in the PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
The do-it-all forward injected the much-needed energy into Alaska in the second half following a lackluster opening two quarters, helping the Aces put away a shorthanded Ginebra side.
Trailing by eight, 36-44, after 24 minutes, the Aces outscored the Gin Kings, 61-39, in the final two quarters with Abueva making his presence felt on the defensive end.
'The Beast' finished with just nine points but had nine rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks to pump life into the Aces' cause.
“Actually sa akin, ginagawa ko lang 'yung role ko as a veteran ngayon sa team na to. Talagang dinodoble ko 'yung sipag,” said the former San Sebastian Stags star.
“Siguro yung first half namin sobrang gigil. Nawala kami sa focus sa play at depensa namin. Nung second half, binigyan kami ng hangin, pinag-isip kami kung ano dapat gagawin namin sa depensa,” he added.
Currently 3-0 for the year, Abueva is relieved to leave the Aces' struggles of 2017 behind.
For the Gilas Pilipinas enforcer, it’s now a matter of sustaining the momentum as they look to get back in contention after a forgettable 42nd season.
“Siguro yung sa amin, yung 2017 parang nilubog na namin yung losing streak namin doon. Ito 2018 na at panibagong destination na naman yung ina-ano namin ngayong 2018 na to,” Abueva continued.
“Samin ngayon, sustain muna namin."
