The Beast blames Chinese food feast for sluggish start, but Abueva compensates with strong finish

    Sep 8, 2017

NEVER again to a heavy meal before a game for Calvin Abueva.

Abueva found himself sluggish for three quarters before regaining his bearings in the payoff period to help Alaska register a second straight win in the PBA Governors Cup, 101-88, against Globalport Friday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.

'The Beast' found himself scoreless heading to the payoff period, but got into the groove just in the nick of time, scoring all of his 12 points in the final 12 minutes of the win that bolstered the Aces' record to 2-6.

Abueva later disclosed to that he had one to many Chinese food dishes prior to the game, thus explaining his lethargic start.

"Mabigat yung kinain ko kanina (before the game). Gutom na gutom kasi ako," said Abueva, who had his share of noodles and dimsum in a popular Chinese fastfood chain just hours prior to the match.

"Ayun medyo bumigat yung katawan ko, kaya bumaba yung laro ko."

The enigmatic forward shot just 4-of-11 from the floor and added five rebounds as he conspired with import LaDontae Henton and Ping Exciminiano to put away the Batang Pier for good.

"Buti nga nakabawi. Ayun natagtag kaya gumanda ang laro," he said.

The win was Alaska's first winning streak this conference and more importantly, keep the team still very much alive in the race for a quarterfinals berth.

The Aces have three games left in the elims against KIA, Meralco, and Rain or Shine.

"Tatlo pa. Sana nga ma-sweep namin ito para makapasok kami sa playoffs," said Abueva.
