RAIN or Shine acting coach Caloy Garcia was left to rue a blunder by import Wayne Chism who lost the handle on an uncontested rebound late in the team’s 82-85 loss to league-leader Talk ‘N Text on Wednesday night.
The Elasto Painters had come back from 16 points down and got a big break when, down two points with 10 seconds left to play, the usually steady Talk 'N Text guard Jimmy Alapag missed both his penalty free throws.
But to Rain or Shine's horror, Chism failed to control the ball as he went all alone for the rebound, tapping it out of bounds instead.
“That was terrible,” Garcia told Spin.ph, referring to Chism’s endgame boo-boo. “We were down by two and nobody was rebounding at the Talk ‘N Text side.
"Jimmy (Alapag) missed two (foul) shots, and probably they (Tropang Texters) were not rebounding because they we’re thinking Jimmy is one of the best free throw shooters in the league,” he added.
At the end of the game, Chism voiced out his frustration as he headed to the Rain or Shine dugout. Moments later, Garcia said the former Tennessee forward apologized to his teammates for letting them down.
“He (Chism) was apologizing to the team. But I just told him that you have to learn what you did wrong and this shouldn’t happen again,” said the Rain or Shine assistant coach, who called the shots in lieu of head coach Yeng Guiao on Wednesday.
Guiao is on a 10-day business trip in Europe and will only be back on Sunday.
What's doubly painful for Garcia was the fact that the Elasto Painters failed to take advantage of the absence of Talk 'N Text import Richard Howell, who left the Big Dome during halftime.
Howell went straight to the Makati Medical Center to have an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) on his right shoulder after a bad fall late in the second period.
The 6-8 Howell appeared to have tripped on Rain or Shine guard Paul Lee's leg while trying to go hard for a layup.
Garcia expects Chism to bounce back strong next Monday when they face Air21 in a crucial matchup that will decide the Elasto Painters' playoff fate.
Rain or Shine is currently tied for fifth to eighth spots with Meralco, Ginebra and Air21 at 3-4.
