Rain or Shine coach Garcia says PBA rivals can no longer take Columbian Dyip lightly

“I’m expecting a lot from Columbian. They’re not the same team like when they came in the league,” says Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia. Jerome Ascano

CALOY Garcia lamented Rain or Shine’s failure to take advantage of its strengths against Columbian Dyip played a huge part in the team’s 96-104 upset loss on Wednesday night in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Garcia said the Elasto Painters obviously have the edge inside against a Columbian side that doesn’t really have the heft and size at the frontcourt.

Unfortunately, Rain or Shine wasn't able to exploit the mismatches, allowing the Dyip to hand Rain or Shine its first loss in the tournament after victories in its first three games.

“I told the players inside the dugout na, sayang we have a good lineup, we have the ‘bigs’ who can play inside against Columbian. That was the game plan, to attack them inside,” said Garcia.

“I told the guards that we have to learn to see that.”

In contrast, Columbian fired 13-of-41 from the three-point region (31 percent) for a better shooting percentage from the floor at 43 percent (38-of-87).

“We started the third quarter on a high note, and after that we started taking bad shots and they were getting their fast break game going,” said Garcia.

It was the second time Columbian had beaten Rain or Shine this season, counting a 98-94 victory during the Philippine Cup, prompting Garcia to quip, ‘suki kami ng Columbian.’

But he said Columbian is definitely a different team from last conference.

“I’m expecting a lot from Columbian. They’re not the same team like when they came in the league,” said Garcia.

“They have guards who can really score and can create for their shooters. And now they’ve got an import who can defend and be aggressive on the boards.”

Import John Fields was a huge present for the Dyip inside with 34 points and 11 rebounds, while Rashawn McCarthy and Jerramy King combined for 36 points, including nine of the team’s 13 triples.
