INSTEAD of Gilas Pilipinas, the cadet national training pool will be sent to a series of friendlies with Japan set late this month in Tokyo.
Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director Sonny Barrios confirmed to Spin.ph that collegiate standouts Greg Slaughter and Kevin Alas will be leading the team.
Barrios said the cadet pool will actually be reinforced by several Meralco players in the three tune-up matches against the Japan national team.
“Coach Ryan (Gregorio) is assembling the team made up of the cadet team and some Bolts players,” he said.
Aside from Alas and Slaughter, also expected to be named as part of the team are Jake Pascual, Garvo Lanete, and Ronald Pascual.
RR Garcia may possibly be dropped from the roster as he’ll be suiting up for Far Eastern University in the coming UAAP men’s basketball tournament.
The friendly games, according to Barrios, are also a part of the cadet team’s preparation and exposure for the Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar although the meet is still six months away.
Originally, Gilas Pilipinas was supposed to depart for the Japanese capital and play the friendlies set June 27 to July 1.
But following the result of the Fiba-Asia Men’s Championship draw, the national team changed its plan as it is likely to collide with the Japanese during the second round of the eliminations.
Instead, Gilas will be flying to Las Vegas for a series of tune-up games possibly against teams from the NBA Summer League from July 4 to 11.
