SAN Miguel capped off its elimination-round campaign on a high note, catching fire late to put away a 114-96 win over Alaska on Sunday night in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Alex Cabagnot exploded for 31 points while Christian Standhardinger had 23 points in his first game back after missing five matches for the Beermen, who finished the eliminations with a 7-4 (win-loss) card.
The Beermen waxed hot from beyond the arc, converting 14 three-pointers. Their playoff position will now depend on the result of the final two elimination-round games of sister team Barangay Ginebra (6-3).
Alaska dropped to 4-6 and is now in a tie for seventh place with NLEX, its playoff fate still very much uncertain.
“We all know we are already in the best-of-three quarterfinals. But this game is really important for us. I’m so happy with the players because nakita niyo ‘yung sense of urgency. We don’t want to get to the quarterfinals on a losing note,” said San Miguel coach Leo Austria.
Arwind Santos added 17 points including five three-pointers while Von Pessumal added 14 points behind three treys. The two made their mark in the final period when the Beermen broke the game wide-open.
Terrence Romeo didn’t play for the Beermen due to dehydration.
Chris Banchero topscored with 22 points while Carl Bryan Cruz added 13 points for the Aces, who are no longer in contention for a top six spot in the quarterfinals.
