PETRON'S resurgence in the PBA Commissioner's Cup took a major blow when starting guard Alex Cabagnot was injured during the Boosters' win over sister team Barangay Ginebra on Sunday night.
The Boosters' wily point guard revealed to Spin.ph that he is currently in crutches after hurting his right foot when he was tackled by childhood friend Mark Caguioa as Petron launched a fastbreak.
Cabagnot's foot was pinned to the floor by the weight of Caguioa as the Ginebra star fell to the floor. An examination on Monday revealed Cabagnot had suffered an inverted sprained right ankle.
“It’s not just my foot, but I also tweaked the back part of my knee. It affected the whole leg," said the Fil-American sentinel. “But thank God, it's nothing serious. Walang fracture and walang torn tendon."
Cabagnot has been ruled out of Petron's match against Meralco on Wednesday and is listed as day-to-day. Doctors said he will be out for a maximum two weeks.
“I’m out tomorrow. I’m still in crutches ... It’s day-to-day,” said Cabagnot.
Cabagnot has been showing up in Petron’s practice the last two days but is left to hope that the injury heals quickly at a time when the underachieving Boosters are finally showing signs of life with the energetic Renaldo Balkman as import.
“I really want to play, but I don’t think my right ankle is gonna let me," he said. “God willing, mag-subside yung swelling.”
Still, the Petron guard believes the team is in good hands as fellow guards Denok Miranda and Chico Lanete, who has recovered from a bruised thigh, pick up the cudgels in his absence.
“I don’t feel no grudges. Alam ko naman si Mark, go hard lagi yun. He’s a competitor,” said Cabagnot of Caguioa, who is a teammate of his older brother, Dino, at the Eagle Rock High School in Los Angeles.
“Pero hindi niya (Caguioa) yun sadya. Mark was very sorry when he saw me in this situation yesterday at the Fort”, revealed Cabagnot.
