JUSTIN Brownlee scored 39 points including some crucial baskets down the stretch as Barangay Ginebra beat San Miguel in overtime, 110-107, in a PBA Commissioner’s Cup Sunday thriller at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Brownlee also pulled down 15 rebounds and issued five asists in a superb no-relief effort that enabled the Gin Kings to snap out of a two-game slump. His three-point play with 2:32 left in extra time gave Ginebra some separation over SMB, 109-104.

The Gin Kings were only up by two, 109-107, but Alex Cabagnot missed a crucial jumper with 21.1 seconds left in overtime, enabling Ginebra to get back to .500 at 3-3 (win-loss).

“Just two heavyweights going at it,” said Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone. “Took an extra round [to see] who could win this one. I like the game because we played within character. We played in the character that we want to play.”

After winning its first game against Blackwater last Friday, the Beermen slumped to a 1-3 record in a game that saw import Charles Rhodes foul out in overtime.

Brownlee hit a three in regulation as Ginebra took a four-point lead, 99-95, with 2:29 left. But San Miguel closed the fourth quarter strong with four straight baskets including a hook shot by Rhodes that tied in with 1:02 left.

Rhodes was actually fouled in the play but missed the bonus shot.

The game was tied at 102-102 ni overtime when LA Tenorio broke the deadlock with a jumper, before Brownlee hit the crucial three-point play.

Tenorio added 16 points while Scottie Thompson had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Gin Kings.

Rhodes had 34 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks before fouling out for the Beermen, who had a triple-double output from Chris Ross with his 11 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists.

San Miguel actually had a big lead early, 26-11, but was outscored by Ginebra, 33-24, in the second period.

    The scores:

    Ginebra 110 – Brownlee 39, Tenorio 16, Thompson 13, Slaughter 13, Mercado 12, J. Aguilar 9, Ferrer 5, Devance 3.
