JUSTIN Brownlee established a new PBA career-high with 49 points as Barangay Ginebra dealt Magnolia an emphatic 102-81 loss on Sunday night in the Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Brownlee eclipsed his previous career best of 46 and got plenty of support from Japeth Aguilar, Stanley Pringle, and LA Tenorio as the Gin Kings clinched a quarterfinal berth with their sixth win in 10 outings.
With Brownlee also grabbing 20 rebounds to complete a double-double effort, the Kings moved up to a share of third place with Blackwater while sending their archrival Hotshots to their second straight defeat and a 5-4 card.
The Gin Kings were quick to seize control of the game after giving up the first eight points against a Hotshots squad that came out strong off the blocks a loss to Blackwater just last Friday.
“I was really amazed with Magnolia’s energy in the first quarter. After playing an overtime game on Friday, they came out with a lot of energy in the first quarter. It was a little scary in the beginning,” said Ginebra coach Tim Cone.
“But I think we were able to settle in to a tempo that worked for us. I felt we were playing their tempo in the first half and coming out in the third quarter, we got a better tempo which we can work more efficiently with,” said Cone.
Aguilar added 18 points and nine rebounds including a few dunks in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Pringle conributed 13 points and five assists, while Tenorio added 12 for the Kings.
Ginebra was still trailing, 58-53, when the Kings went on a 20-2 run to grab a 73-60 lead. They entered the fourth with a 78-64 lead and never looked back.
James Farr scored 34 points and grabbed 21 rebounds while Mark Barroca had 16 points for the Hotshots.
