DESPITE being traded from San Miguel to TNT during the offseason, Brian Heruela has kept a friendly relationship with his former teammates with the Beermen.
Heruela said he has stayed connected with his ex-teammates with San Miguel months after he was traded to TNT in a blockbuster trade that sent Terrence Romeo to the Beermen.
Heruela was also a former teammate of five-time Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo during their days with University of Cebu in the Cesafi before moving on to the PBA.
“It’s fun especially right now, going up against them,” said Heruela, who during a postgame interview with SPIN.ph on Monday is being greeted by several San Miguel players.
“Before, we are with each other every day in practice. Now, it’s fun to go and compete with them because they are a great team. So it’s going to be fun,” said Heruela, who had a three-year career with San Miguel.
Incidentally, Heruela is also good friends with the player he was exchanged with in Romeo. While they are close friends, Heruela said it is all business when going up against Romeo, especially in this series.
The two have also been seen guarding each other during the best-of-three quarterfinal series between TNT and San Miguel that have now reached Game Three which will be played on Wednesday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
“We are very good friends. He is a competitor. I’m a competitor. Off the court, we are good friends,” the 29-year-old Heruela said.
“He is tough to guard,” Heruela said of Romeo. “He is a talented player. I just want to do my best individually and make it hard on him.”
Incidentally, Heruela made a key stop late in the game when he stole the ball from Alex Cabagnot to protect a five-point lead on their way to a 93-88 win in Game Two.
For Game Three, Heruela hopes TNT will be able to get a chance at beating the four-time defending champion San Miguel.
“It’s just the right place at the right time. We needed that stop. We want to give ourselves a chance in Game Three. It’s a good stop for the team,” said Heruela.
