BOCAUE -- Brian Heruela did what was expected of him and more as he begun his new chapter in TNT.
Coming off the bench to open the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup, the Cebuano guard did what he does best and was a bulldog on both ends of the floor.
Heruela finished with 14 points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals against four turnovers in 19 minutes of play, a rather respectable debut for the seldom-used player in San Miguel.
But the numbers are the least of the heady guard's concerns.
"I'm thankful, don't get me wrong. I'm just always thankful for the opportunity. But we lost and for me, the win is more important for us," he said.
TNT failed to usher in its new era on a high, falling to Ginebra, 90-79 in front of a packed crowd at Philippine Arena.
Heruela, however, knew better not to dwell much on their miscues as he looked at the big picture of this new beginning of his.
"As a team, I think we're doing great and we're in the right direction," he commended, with him showing flashes of potential linking up with backcourt partners Jayson Castro, Roger Pogoy, Jericho Cruz, and Ryan Reyes.
"We just have to watch film, make some adjustments, and go from there, do what we can do better. I think we were right there. They're just a lot bigger than us so I think we just got to grab those 50-50 balls and we should be fine," he said.
Heruela also knows that there's still so much left for him to learn in this new system and believes that with more time together, he can aid KaTropa back to contention.
"These guys are great, from the management top to bottom, to my coaches and my teammates. They're teaching me and guiding me in whatever way I can help. I love it," he said.
