Petron Blaze is aware that the PBA Governors Cup is a short conference and, therefore, there's very little room for complacency.
So after a blowout loss to Talk 'N Text the last time around, the Boosters played with a sense of urgency and walloped the Alaska Aces, 107-94, on Sunday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“Every game is important,” Boosters coach Ato Agustin said. “Yun palagi ang pinapasok ko sa mga utak ng players ko.”
The Boosters took command early and never let up. They led by five at the end of the first quarter, extending it to eight at halftime, before erecting a 15-point lead entering the fourth.
“We started strong,” Agustin said. “Maganda rin shot selection namin.
“Nakita namin mga mali namin at nakapag-adjust kami. Nakita nila ang nangyayari pag nagre-relax at hindi sila dumedependesa.”
Import Eddie Basden led the Boosters’ balanced attack with 29 points, five assists, and four steals, while Chris Lutz had 14 points, five boards, and five assists.
Arwind Santos, who had a double-double of 13 points and 11 boards, gave the Boosters their biggest lead at 22, after his triple made it 98-76 with 4:28 remaining in the game.
The Aces made their last-ditch push with a 12-1 run, cutting the lead to 11, 99-88. But four straight points from Basden after that sealed the Petron win.
Alaska import Jason Forte had a double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds, but was scoreless in the first quarter.
Sonny Thoss and Gabby Espinas led the Aces (1-3) in scoring with 18 points apiece.
