AS his Blackwater franchise absorbed a 10th straight loss in its maiden PBA season, team owner Dioceldo Sy disclosed his intention to shore up the Elite’s roster with young players during the conference break in a bid to build a run-and-gun team for the Commissioner’s Cup.
Sy acknowledged the rookie team is still a long way to go in its bid to become a playoff-bound squad.
“We need a solid point guard, shooters, slashers and bigs, at halos lahat na need namin eh mga younger legs,” Sy told Spin.ph following the team’s 80-90 loss to Talk ‘N Text on Saturday in the Petron Philippine Cup road game in Binan, Laguna.
For the season-opening tournament, Sy built his team around former role players and from the dispersal pool.
And so far, only journeyman Bryan Faundo has been up to the task as he emerges as the team’s leading scorer and rebounder with career-high averages of 10.6 points and 6.7 rebounds.
But Sy feels it would take more than a herculean effort from a journeyman-turned-leading scorer-and-rebounder in Faundo to turn things around for the Elite.
With Blackwater expected to have a long conference break before returning to action in the mid-season tournament, Sy explained he intends to bring in an import, who could provide the size and
consistent scoring, something they sorely lacked in the all-Filipino conference.
Blackwater takes a nine-day break, before returning to action on Dec. 9 when it faces San Miguer Beer in the final play date of the elimination round.
The Elite will try to end their losing spell and avoid becoming the first team to finish winless in a conference since the Shopinas Clickers’ 0-14 record in the 2012 Philippine Cup.
