BLACKWATER dusted off rust as it whipped the Las Piñas All-Stars, 98-83, in an exhibition match promoting the fight against drugs on Thursday at the Starmall Alabang gym in Muntinlupa.
In their first competitive action since their last game of the PBA season a month ago, the Elite let the selection squad stay toe to toe with them early before pulling away late to score the one-sided victory.
Robby Celiz and Raffy Reyes spearheaded the Leo Isaac-coached Elite against the commercial team led by former pros Al Vergara and Egay Billones, and a cameo appearance by Las Piñas Rep. Mark Villar.
“This is part of strengthening the team,” Blackwater owner Dioceldo Sy said of the friendly that was free of charge to the public.
Sy said the franchise is planning to tie-up with other local governments in the future.
"We’ve always advocated against drugs. We’re very happy to be involved in Rep. Villar’s campaign,” Blackwater governor Silliman Sy said.
Next in the Elite’s preparation for the upcoming season is an invitational tournament in Malaysia from August 28 to September 6.
The Elite, who own the ninth and 13th overall picks in the August 23 rookie draft, will bring their eventual selections in the eight-day, three-city competition where four local sides, two Chinese teams, and an Australian are expected to take part.
“It will be part of our buildup,” Sy said.
