MIKE Cortez has found his way back to Blackwater after spending the last PBA season with GlobalPort.
The need for a veteran point guard to stabilize the Elite's young backcourt made up of Roi Sumang and Mark Cruz prompted management to pluck out the former No. 1 overall pick from the unrestricted free agent list.
Cortez however, was only signed for the season-opening Philippine Cup.
"Need a veteran point guard and Mike is the best available talent in the market," said team owner Dioceldo Sy on Monday. "One conference muna siya and then we'll take it from there."
This marks the second stint for the former De La Salle playmaker with Blackwater after seeing action for the team in 2015.
He later transferred to Globalport when his former college mentor Franz Pumaren took over the coaching job last season only to be left unprotected on the free agent list during the offseason.
At 37, age obviously became a factor for Globalport not signing Cortez to a new contract as the Batang Pier are geared towards forming a team built on youth and speed.
Cortez briefly tried out for a slot at San Miguel before the Blackwater call-up came.
