BLACKWATER Sports is interested in having PBA great Ramon Fernandez in its fold in any capacity when the expansion team makes its debut in the pro league next season.
Blackwater team owner Dioceldo Sy said he extended the invitation to the four-time league MVP when he had the opportunity to talk to Fernandez during the ‘Pagpupugay sa 100 Years of Philippine Sports’ event on Thursday night at Resorts World Manila.
Sy clarified that the talk with Fernandez, who is now based in Cebu, was just exploratory but insisted he is definitely interested to have the PBA great in his team.
"We saw Mon Fernandez and asked (if) he is interested to make a comeback,” Sy said of Fernandez, named one of the 25 Greatest Players in the PBA after a 19-year career spent with Toyota, Manila Beer, Purefoods, and San Miguel Beer.
Sy said having one of the legends of the PBA back will be good for the league.
“Tignan natin,” said Sy. “It’s good for the PBA, publicity-wise. May (Manny) Pacquiao ang Kia, may Mon Fernandez ang Blackwater.”
“I even asked, 'Are you open to play again?' But I was just joking,” Sy added.
Sy, whose teams won championships in the PBL and the D-League prior to making the jump to the PBA, said Blackwater's plans won't be firmed up until after the dispersal draft next month.
“We can’t do anything yet because we have to wait for the dispersal draft in July. Then, we will have an idea,” Sy said.
