THE woes of Blackwater continued on Saturday and the Bossing are now approaching the league record for the longest losing streak in PBA history.

The Bossing’s 114-92 defeat against Phoenix Super LPG put them at 0-9 in the ongoing 2021 PBA Philippine Cup, and 0-17 dating back to the 2020 Philippine Cup bubble, moving the team a loss away from tying the league record of 18 set by Great Taste/Presto in the 1980 season.

During that year, the Great Taste Discoverers lost their final nine games of the Open Conference. After skipping the Invitational Conference, the team was renamed as Presto Fun Drinks but the Consolidated Food Corporation (CFC)-owned team lost its first nine games of the All-Filipino Conference in one of the darkest times of the franchise that won six titles in PBA history.

Blackwater now shares that ignominy of the second longest losing streak with Ginebra, which lost seven games in a row in the Commissioner’s Cup and its first 10 in the Governors’ Cup during the 1995 season.

No relief in sight for Bossing

The Bossing has already surpassed Mahindra/Kia's 16 straight losses in the 2017 Commissioner’s Cup, 2017 Governors’ Cup, and the 2018 Philippine Cup.

The road to ending the losing streak won’t come easy as the Bossing's final two games will be against Meralco and NLEX, two teams which are in the upper half of the team standings.

The reign of Nash Racela began for Blackwater on a high note last year when the then-Elite recorded a 2-1 record including a 98-88 win over NLEX on October 17, 2020.

That turned out to be the last time the Elite won as they lost the final eight games of the elimination round in the 2020 bubble.

Not even a moniker switch could change the fortunes of the squad as the Bossing have racked up nine straight losses in the 2021 Philippine Cup in semi-bubble in Bacolor, Pampanga.
