OFFICIALS of expansion franchises Blackwater and Kia Motors are not expecting much from their maiden season in the PBA.
Blackwater alternate governor Silliman Sy said as a team, the Elite have set a modest goal of at least making the quarterfinals in any of the three conferences in the coming 40th season of the league.
“We have set a goal, which is No. 8. Mahirap siya, pero wala namang masamang mag-dream big,” said Sy during Tuesday’s press launch of the league’s new season at the Edsa Shangri-La Hotel in Mandaluyong.
But given the set of untested newcomers and veterans the Elite got during the offseason, a more realistic approach is possibly finishing 10th overall in their rookie year, Sy added.
“Realistically speaking, we have a mixture of veterans and young ones, so probably, a 10th position would be good and we would be happy, being in our first year,” added the soft-spoken Blackwater top official.
Meantime, Kia president and board governor Ginia Domingo said “winning a few games” this coming season wouldn’t be that bad anymore for the team given the way it was able to build its roster through the dispersal draft last July.
“We have very low expectations for the team honestly for this year. Alam naman ng lahat, we built our team,” explained Domingo.
“We’re an expansion team. Pinakamaaga naming take sa rookie draft was 11th na si Congressman Manny Pacquiao, our superstar in the team. So in terms of chances, we would like to be very positive about it, pero siguro naman makakapanalo kami,” added the lady executive.
Blackwater whipped Kia, 88-77, in their preseason match last Saturday.
The two will have a rematch on opening day as they play in the curtain raiser of a Sunday doubleheader at the Philippine Arena, to be capped by the main game between Barangay Ginebra and Talk `N Text.
