BLACKWATER just ended a forgettable PBA Philippine Cup campaign but this early, it already has an import for the next conference.
The Elite will be bringing in seven-foot-center Chris Charles, a two-time Asean Basketball League (ABL) best import, for the Commissioner’s Cup as they try to bounce back after a winless debut in the Philippine Cup.
Blackwater owner Dioceldo Sy hopes the early signing would be a big help to the team following a 0-11 campaign in its first PBA conference.
“The import is coming in so we are way, way ahead of the other teams. Hopefully, the early preparation will help,” Sy said on Tuesday.
Charles, who played for NCAA Division I team Villanova, led Hi-Tech Bangkok City past the Westports Malaysia Dragons in the 2014 ABL finals. Charles averaged 20.5 points and 14.1 rebounds during the season.
Charles won the ABL World Import MVP in two consecutive years playing for the Thailand Slammers/Hi-Tech Bangkok City franchise including in 2013 where he was coached by Joe ‘Jellybean’ Bryant, the father of Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant.
He won the Defensive Player of the Year honors in the same year.
