NELBERT Omolon was so contrite for bungling what could have been Wednesday night’s highlight-reel play in the Smart Bro-PBA Philippine Cup.
The San Miguel back up forward botched converting to basket a perfect no-look feed ala ‘Magic’ Johnson, by a rushing June Mar Fajardo during one sequence of the Beermen’s 102-86 rout of Mahindra at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Omolon admitted he thought all along his 6-foot-10 teammate was going strong to the hoop after dribbling the ball from the other end of a transition.
“Nagulat ako akala ko kasi idederetso niya na,” said Omolon of the lightning pass that denied Fajardo an assist. “Nag fake ako kasi akala ko matangkad yung nasa harapan ko, si Mark Yee pala. Kung na-anticipate ko (yung pasa), baka na-shoot pa.”
The veteran forward said he’s no longer surprised seeing the two-time league MVP carrying the ball during fastbreak play.
“Ginagawa niya rin yun sa practice,” admitted Omolon, who played his best game in a San Miguel uniform this season after finishing with six points and four rebounds in 20 minutes of play.
Omolon said he and June Mar had done the same play during past practices of the team, so much so that he regretted failing to complete it when it mattered most.
“Nanghinayang nga ako,” he said.
“Nag-sorry naman agad ako, pero sabi niya (June Mar) ok lang naman.”
