FRIDAY the 13th brought a bit of bad luck to Kevin Alas as NLEX lost to Mahindra, 103-93, in the Smart Bro-PBA Philippine Cup right on his birthday.
The Road Warriors playmaker, who turned 24, said the loss what the only smudge in what could’ve been a ‘perfect’ day.
“Syempre malungkot,” Alas said in a short chat with Spin.ph after the loss. “Perfect sana yung birthday ko kung nanalo kami. Pero ganun talaga.”
“Kasi kaninang umaga, naka-psyche up na kami na mananalo kami eh,” he admitted. “But we started flat, then dere-deretso na eh.”
The sophomore combo guard has yet to break out of his shell for the Road Warriors as he continues to recover from a foot injury that needed surgery and kept him out for almost six months at the tail end of last season.
“To be honest, disappointed pa ako sa nilalaro ko kasi I know I can play a lot better,” the former Letran star said.
“Yung galing ako sa injury, medyo nahihirapan pa ako. Yun lang ang pinaglalabanan ko: yung psychological. Yung game shape at timing na lang talaga yung hinahabol ko.”
Asked what his birthday wish is, Alas hopes the Road Warriors make it deep in the playoffs.
“Para sa NLEX, mag-improve kami to make it to the semis.”
“Maging masaya lang,” he said with a smile, before leaving in the company of his dad, Alaska assistant coach Louie, and mom, Liza, for a family dinner.
“Para medyo sumaya naman.”
