ARWIND Santos admitted he was caught by surprise by his non-inclusion in the 17-man national pool named on Thursday afternoon by Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes.
“Hindi ako tinawagan,” was Santos’ initial response before learning from Spin.ph that his name was not included in the national pool for the Fiba-Asia championships in August.
Santos has long been coveted by Reyes in the Gilas national squad, but surprisingly, the consistent PBA Mythical First Team member’s name was nowhere to be found on Reyes' list.
On Tuesday, the gangling forward from Pampanga had offered to personally seek permission from San Miguel Corp.'s big boss Ramon S. Ang to play for Gilas if he was picked by Reyes.
Santos, though, was quick to shake off the disappointment, especially at a time when his wife is set to give birth to their fourth child.
The former FEU 'King Tamaraw' was in fact by his wife's side at the St. Luke's Medical Center when Spin.ph caught up with him on Thursday.
“Okay lang kung hindi ako naisama," Santos said. "Basta kung kailangan nila ako sa team, lalaro naman ako.”
