BEAU Belga’s wish to become part of the Gilas Pilipinas training pool has just been granted.
The burly Rain or Shine center has been made part of the Gilas Pilipinas roster that had been hard-hit by injuries as it enters the most crucial part of its buildup for the coming Fiba-Asia Men’s Basketball Championship.
Team manager Butch Antonio confirmed Belga’s addition to Gilas lineup on Thursday night shortly after the team conducted its final practice at The Arena in San Juan prior to its scheduled departure for Lithuania on Sunday for a two-week training camp.
Belga, who has impressed in the few practices he had with Gilas, was informed about his inclusion to the pool only on Wednesday night.
The big man out of Philippine Christian University has been very vocal about his desire to be included in the national team, stressing he’s willing to do whatever task coach Chot Reyes will assign to him.
Even as a late inclusion, Belga will still join the team in the Lithuania trip, but will be departing at a later date as his visa is still being processed.
Of the several players invited by Reyes to join the practice of the Gilas training pool that has been down to a 12-man roster from an original cast of 17, Belga is the sole inclusion made by Reyes.
In the few times he attended the practices of Gilas, Belga obviously is still struggling with the team system, but had been getting a lot of support and inputs from deputy coaches Jong Uichico and Josh Reyes.
