BEAU Belga is neither the leading scorer nor top rebounder for Rain or Shine this season, but coach Caloy Garcia said his play will determine how far the Elastopainters will go in the 2019 Philippine Cup campaign.
Belga is averaging 8.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 4.2 assists through five games in the conference, not exactly jawdropping numbers when compared to those of leading scorer James Yap or even leading rebounder and rookie Javee Mocon.
Garcia, though, believes ROS' fate is in the hands of its hulking big man.
“I think one key also for us, if we want to go far, is Beau,” Garcia said. “Kasi si Beau, if he plays well, nadadala niya ‘yung team eh. So he has to play well every game if we want to go far.”
Consistency has been the calling card of Belga in the four wins Rain or Shine has posted so far this conference. Belga averaged 9.25 points, 6.75 rebounds, and 4.25 assists and made 41 percent of his shots in those victories against traditional powerhouses San Miguel, Barangay Ginebra, and Alaska, along with NLEX.
In the solitary defeat to Blackwater, Belga only had four points on 1-of-6 shooting, even though he had seven rebounds and four assists.
Passing has also been Belga’s forte in the season-opening conference as he leads the team in assists. He even had seven assists in Rain or Shine’s win over NLEX in the season opener last January 18.
Belga, however, said the entire team has been performing like a well-oiled machine. The balanced scoring attack, Belga said, shows that each player in the Elastopainters side has been embracing the team concept.
“We’re doing fine kasi we’re not thinking of ourselves,” Belga said. “Parang ang iniisip namin is i-run ‘yung system ni coach. Nagbe-benefit ang lahat eh. The last five games, scattered ‘yung puntos. Okay ‘to for us. Sana magtuluy-tuloy.”
“Maganda ‘yung ganung klase na kalat ‘yung scoring kasi you don’t know kung sino (ang gagawa). Talagang lahat kami puwede. Lahat dedepensahan mo. ‘Yung malilibre, it’s your opportunity to take the shot. Mas okay ‘yun kesa sa iisa lang,” said Belga.
