BEAU Belga is not about to let his plans for the holidays get spoiled just like that.
With the threat of having to undergo daily practices from Christmas eve all the way to the final day of the year should they lose to NLEX, Belga and the rest of Rain or Shine turned on the switch in the second half and salvaged a 107-97 win in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Philsports Arena.
Rain or Shine came out flat in its first season meeting with former coach Yeng Guiao that it found itself trailing at the half, 58-48.
That’s when coach Caloy Garcia dropped the boom inside the team dugout at the break.
“Sabi kasi ni Coach Caloy, pag natalao dito, may ensayo bukas hanggang New Year,” recalled Belga of the team’s halftime huddle.
No way, Jose.
“Sabi ko hindi puwede, marami akong plano. Marami akong gagawin ng Pasko. Kaya kailangan manalo.”
So win, the Elasto Painters did.
Working like the cohesive unit that it was molded to be by Guiao, Rain or Shine held the Road Warriors to just 12 points in the payoff period while scoring 27 in a strong finishing kick that left Belga heaving a big sigh of relief.
“Na-relieve ako kasi kung saka-sakali kung natalo kami, pangalawang bukol na ito. Una kay Paul (Lee), tapos ngayon kay Coach Yeng,” he said.
Last week, the Elasto Painters lost to Lee, their former teammate, in their first meeting against the Star Hotshots following the offseason trade that also involved two-time MVP James Yap.
With the win safely secured, there won’t be any practice for the team in the next three days before they return to training on December 27.
Add to that, Belga said he and his teammates will have a positive vibes as they celebrate the rest of the holidays.
“Maganda yung Pasko at New Year,”he said. “Okay rin yung matatapos ang taon na galing sa panalo. Positive ito para sa bagong taon na papasok.”
