BEAU Belga is in doubt for Game Two of Rain or Shine's PBA Governors Cup semifinal series against San Miguel Beer owing to an injured right ankle.
Belga sprained his ankle in the second quarter of the series opener on Thursday night. Although he managed to return to the game, the beefy big man was never the same as Rain or Shine blew a 24-point lead, losing 95-101.
The former Gilas Pilipinas reserve attempted to join the Elasto Painters in practice on Friday afternoon but by then, he said the swelling on the foot has gone up and the pain became intolerable.
“Sinubukan ko pa mag-practice kahapon kaso masakit na masakit. Saka magang-maga eh. Pero tinitignan-tignan ko pa eh,” Belga told Spin.ph.
On Saturday morning, Belga said there was still pain when he attempts to push off the injured foot.
Belga's injury is a big blow for Rain or Shine, which uses the former PCU Dolphin as its primary defender for 6-10 reigning league MVP June Mar Fajardo.
Without the 230-lb. pride of Gubat, Sorsogon, Rain or Shine may have to turn to fellow 'Extra Rice Inc.' member JR Quinahan or Raymond Almazan on defense against the dominant Fajardo.
“Wala kaming bigs. Kami lang ni JR (Quinahan) ang na-assign na dumepensa kay June Mar. Kung di gaano kalaki na big lang 'yun, kaya ni Gabe (Norwood) 'yun. Kaso June Mar yun eh,” Belga said.
“Nakaka-frustrate nga kasi gustong-gusto ko nga maglaro. Gusto ko nga manalo. Pero kaya nila 'yan. Pagtutulong-tulungan na lang 'yan. Ganun naman kami, tulong-tulong,” he added.
Fajardo, for his part, said he hopes the injury to Belga, a teammate during Gilas Pilipinas' overseas campaigns last year, is nothing serious.
“Sana makabalik siya. Hindi naman natin gusto na may ma-injure. Sana okay lang siya. 'Yun ang dapat ipag-pray natin - 'yung okay siya,” said Fajardo.
Asked if Belga’s injury aided SMB's fightback in Game One, the Cebuano big man said, “Siguro. Maganda nilalaro ni Beau nun eh saka nakakapuntos pa siya. Malaking bagay talaga si Beau sa kalaban
“Pero sana nga maging okay siya. Sana makalaro siya next time,” he said.
