BEAU Belga got his name – and probably his toughness – from a national hero.
As he celebrated his 31st birthday on the same day the country commemorated Andres Bonifacio, Belga related that his first name 'Beau' is indeed a shortened version of the name of the national hero.
The Rain or Shine enforcer's full name? Beau Michael Vincent Belga.
“Pinaiksi lang yung Bonifacio, tapos dinagdagan lang ng Michael tapos Vincent,” the PBA star said in a short chat with SPIN.ph after the PBA Press Corps Awards on Thursday night.
And Belga is honored to be named after the man known as the Father of the Philippine revolution.
“Oo naman, national hero yun eh, kaya baka ganun din ako katapang dahil may pinagmanahan,” the 6-foot-5 enforcer said with a chuckle. “It’s an honor.”
The Gubat, Sorsogon native, who is entering his 10th year in the PBA, is just wishing to sustain his longevity in the league and good health for his family on his birthday.
“Siguro magtuloy-tuloy pa yung magandang tinatakbo ng career ko sa PBA, tumagal pa, and injury-free,” Belga said. “Syempre yung sa family ko, kasi importante sa akin yung family ko. Pag masaya family ko, masaya din ako. Syempre good health din.”
What’s sure to stay the same is him always granting interviews – reason for him being named to the All-Interview team on Thursday night.
“Ito ang first (individual) award ko sa PBA,” the two-time champion said after receiving the award.
“Never ako nag-decline ng interview,” Belga told SPIN.ph later. “Kahit na pagod…minsan, ang sagot ko pa-loko, talagang entertainer in short. Every interview hindi naman ako tatanggi.”
