Bay Area coach Brian Goorjian insists 'I'm no crybaby'

'I’ve never come up once and said anything negative about the PBA or officiating, ever. And I never will. That’s a crybaby and I’m not that'

BAY Area coach Brian Goorjian once again reiterated on Friday that he is not the kind of coach who would habitually complain about the officiating after every loss, as perceived by some Filipino fans on social media.

Goorjian said he will never complain about the officiating in the PBA where they are competing as a guest team. When he declined to talk to reporters after the Game Three loss to Barangay Ginebra, Goorjian said it was because he was angry at his team for letting a win slip away and not at the officiating.

“I got a couple of characteristics and I’m new in this country, a couple of values. But I’m not like that and I’m not a crybaby,” said the concurrent Australian national team coach after the Dragons evened the Commisisoner's Cup Finals with a 94-86 win over Ginebra in Game Four.

“I’ll do anything as coach [Tim] Cone would do to win. I would do anything and everything I possibly can to protect my team. And when the game is over, I look at the man I competed against and I shake his hand. Nothing to do with referees. Nothing to do with the fans.”

“I was pissed after the last game. We let that slip. And we played a great team that is well-coached. I can’t remember being more angry than I was after the last game,” said Goorjian.

Goorjian said critics can simply look back at his previous press conferences as well as interviews he granted in the past, saying he never once lashed out at the officiating in the PBA.

“What I said all the way through this, I’ve been asked, should we have different refs come in from different countries. And I said no. I support the referees,” said Goorjian.

“I’ve been in this press conference 15 times, I’ve never said anything negative about the PBA. I’ve never said anything negative about the referees. After the game was over, I was angry at my team. I was angry at how I coached the game. I was disappointed.

"And so, ‘Keep your mouth shut, don’t do this.’ Lessons learned after 40 years of coaching. But I’ve never come up once and said anything negative about the PBA or officiating, ever. And I never will. That’s a crybaby and I’m not that. Brought up differently,” said Goorjian.

Instead of delving into how Game Three was officiated, Goorjian said he moved on and studied what went wrong in that contest. It paid dividends as Bay Area evened the best-of-seven series at 2-2.

“I kept my mouth shut to the media, to the team, collected my thoughts, and went to the bunker knowing that we didn’t have [Andrew] Nicholson tonight and we have to bring it. We have to play with a defensive presence and we have to move the ball,” said Goorjian.
