BASER Amer felt like he was coming home after he was picked by Meralco in the first round of the PBA Rookie Draft held on Sunday at the Robinsons Place in Ermita, Manila.
Amer was made the No. 7 pick overall by the Bolts, setting the stage for a reunion with his former head coach at San Beda in Ronnie Magsanoc and assistant Xavi Nunag, as well as current Red Lions head coach Jamike Jarin.
“Sobrang blessed. Naging coach ko si coach Ronnie, coach Xavi, tapos si coach Jamike,” said Amer.
It only gets better from there for the Red Lion as he will be joining a Meralco backcourt that includes his acknowledged mentor Jimmy Alapag, who recently came out of retirement following a trade to join the Bolts from Talk 'N Text.
Amer said he is looking forward to learning with Alapag, who was part of the coaching staff when the Gilas cadets took titles in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (Seaba) championship and the SEA Games this year.
“May mentor ako sa team. Kumbaga, dati napapanood ko lang siya. Ngayon, kasama ko na. Sobrang blessed talaga,” said Amer.
Amer also said he looks forward to being coached by Meralco head coach Norman Black.
“Gusto ko rin maging coach si coach Norman since high school pa,” said Amer.
