Ato Agustin wary of Rain or Shine import Wayne Chism as Al Thornton 50-point explosion still fresh on Kings' minds

    Mar 15, 2015

WAYNE Chism and Rain or Shine’s running game are two of Ginebra coach Ato Agustin's main concerns when the Kings and Elasto Painters cross paths on Sunday in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Astrodome.

Agustin noted how big a problem Chism would pose for the Kings after erupting for 50 points in Rain or Shine’s 129-114 loss to San Miguel Beer the last time.

The output was the same number poured in by Al Thornton when NLEX upset Ginebra, 96-90, on Wednesday.

“Si Chism, he’s a big shooter so siyempre, kailangan din namin ma-matchup siya with a quicker guy, like Japeth (Aguilar). Though at the start, si Greg (Slaughter) and Mike  (Dunigan) need to have a good start,” said Agustin.

Aside from the 6-foot-8 Chism, Agustin is also looking at controlling the tempo of the game, aware that Rain or Shine thrives on its run-and-gun style of offense.

“Lahat sila, they love to run so we have to limit their transition points and we need to play them sa halfcourt set lang,” he added.

A big question mark though for Rain or Shine is coach Yeng Guiao, who got ejected in the waning moments of the team’s 15-point blowout against the Beermen for incurring his second technical foul for a slight nudge he gave on San Miguel import AZ Reid.

The PBA Commissioner’s Office has yet to issue any summon order for Guiao, who is still expected to call the shots for the Elasto Painters in the 5 p.m. game at the Astrodome.

Despite the uncertainty of his situation, Guiao is the least bit worried even with only a day to prepare against Ginebra.

“Sa amin, ang malaking factor din, naka-three wins kami sunud-sunud pero nawala yung momentum nung All-Star break,” he said.

“But we just need to regain that. At kahit magkasunud yung laro, I think it’s good for us kasi matagal yung break, para maka-build up lang yung momentum.”

Despite the loss of both teams, Rain or Shine (5-3) and Ginebra (4-4) have good chances of making the playoffs.

“Malaki ang tsansa namin (to get to the playoffs). Iyung opportunity namin nandyan, but we have to do our part, di puwedeng umasa sa ibang teams. Kailangan manalo ng manalo,” said Agustin.
