BARANGAY Ginebra got back to its winning ways, beating Magnolia Chicken Timplados, 87-77, on Sunday in the PBA 48th Season Philippine Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Gin Kings drew huge games from the quartet of Stanley Pringle, Japeth Aguilar, Maverick Ahanmisi, and Jamie Malonzo to pull off the win, bouncing back from their previous loss to Meralco before the All-Star and Holy Week break.
The Gin Kings improved to 3-1, while the Hotshots suffered their first defeat after two games.
Pringle set the tone for Ginebra, scoring 13 of his team-high 17 points in the first half before Aguilar, Ahanmisi and Malonzo took over in the second half.
Aguilar finished with 16 points after tallying just two points in the first half.
Ahanmisi had 16 points including a three-pointer to put the game away and gave Ginebra an 85-75 lead.
Malonzo added 11 points including six in the third quarter where he, and LA Tenorio, led a 7-0 run to break a 53-53 run that brought momentum to the Gin Kings.
“I like what our guys did,” said Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone, who helped the team win its 100th game against the Magnolia/Purefoods franchise. “We came from that tough loss against Meralco. We were kinda embarrassed out there. They really showed that they care. They care about their fans, they care about their performance, and came in here locked in.”
“This is the way we expect and hope to play all the time,” said Cone.
Christian Standhardinger also produced 11 points, 14 rebounds, and seven assists, while Sidney Onwubere came off the bench and had eight points and six rebounds in 17 minutes.
Ian Sangalang had 17 points, while Jio Jalalon added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Hotshots.
