ANGELES CITY - LA Tenorio and rookie Scottie Thompson hit big three-pointers in the second overtime as Barangay Ginebra survived a scare from Blackwater Elite, 102-94, in a PBA Philippine Cup road game on Saturday night.
Greg Slaughter had a big game with 35 points and 15 rebounds, but it was the two little men who made the difference when Ginebra finally gained separation from Blackwater before a roaring crowd at the Angeles University Foundation gym.
Tenorio hit a three-pointer to break the last deadlock at 94-all before Thompson added a trey from the deep left corner for a 100-94 spread, sucking the life out of a Blackwater team that had golden opportunities to win, both in regulation and in the first overtime.
Tenorio added a late layup to put the final touches on a hard-earned victory that raised Ginebra's record to 5-4 (win-loss). Interestingly, all of the Kings' victories came from road games.
"I told the guys before the game that we were going to bleed for this win, but we bled a lot more than I thought we were going to," Gin Kings coach Tim Cone said.
Blackwater had won just one of its first seven games this season, but the Elite were far more competitive in this game which they almost won in regulation, and again in the first extra time.
However, Jason Ballesteros blew two free throws with 4.6 seconds left in regulation and the game tied at 85-all while Blackwater rookie Art Dela Cruz threw up a jumper late in the first overtime that was off line.
Given a new lease on life, Ginebra turned on the heat on both ends of the floor in the second overtime where they outscored the Elite, 10-2, with Thompson and Tenorio scoring five each.
Ginebra also held Blackwater scoreless in the final 2:30 minutes.
Japeth Aguilar backed up his frontline partner by scoring 25 points and grabbing seven rebounds before his provincemates while Tenorio finished with 19. Thompson added nine points.
Reil Cervantes led five Blackwater players in double figures with 13 points.
