BARAKO Bull’s incoming Canadian import Liam McMorrow is arriving in Manila with an extra motivation to win the PBA Governors Cup championship.
The seven-foot McMorrow is fresh from a National Basketball League-Canada Finals that saw his team Halifax Rainmen lose by forfeiture on Thursday (Friday Manila time).
Energy coach Koy Banal said McMorrow told him in an overseas call that he was hit by a chair during a heated pre-game shoot around and the game was never played.
“Sinugod daw siya (McMorrow) tapos hinampas daw siya ng silya, so na-stop na from there yung Game Seven,” Banal told Spin.ph, shortly after the Energy’s 91-92 exhibition game loss to KIA Motors on Friday at Green Meadows gym.
According to a Yahoo Sports report on Friday (Manila time), the Rainmen refused to play the deciding Game Seven at the Windsor Express’ home floor in Windsor, Ontario for “fear of their safety”.
The Rainmen boarded the team bus and left, an hour before the scheduled tip-off and headed back to Toronto.
The Express were eventually declared champion by the league, giving Windsor its second straight NBL-Canada championship.
The former Tennessee Tech big man averaged 13.5 points and 7.7 rebounds for the Rainmen.
McMorrow, who also had stints with the Iowa Energy in the NBA D-League and the Bank of Taiwan in Taiwan’s Super Basketball League (SBL), arrives early Sunday morning and will proceed to the team’s afternoon practice.
Barako Bull and McMorrow will play their debut game for the season-ending third conference against the NLEX Road Warriors next Wednesday.
