TWO of the hottest teams in the PBA Governors Cup cross paths on Wednesday as unbeaten Barako Bull goes up against streaking San Miguel Beer at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Energy will be bringing with them in the 4 p.m. encounter their perfect 4-0 record against a Beermen side that has won its last three outings.
Barako Bull coach Koy Banal said the current mix of local players have been playing great with 7-foot import Liam McMorrow, one reason why the team is currently on top of the heap.
“It’s a sign that everybody is excited with what’s happening on our team. I want to give it to the players. If one guy or two guys have an off night, somebody will step up,” said Banal of the Energy, who are fresh from Sunday’s victory over Meralco.
JC Intal and new acquisitions Dylan Ababou and Joseph Yeo have dished off big games so far for the league leader, forming a strong supporting cast for the wide-bodied McMorrow.
The outstanding plays of all three locals earned them the Accel-PBA Press Corps. Player of the Week citations during the first three weeks of the tournament.
McMorrow, fresh from a stint at the National Basketball League-Canada, is averaging 25.3 points, while shooting at a high 63.2 percent from the field.
The big man out of Tennessee Tech also leads the tournament in rebounds with 22.0 boards.
Barako Bull though will have its hands full containing San Miguel’s talent-loaded roster led by resurgent import Arizona Reid, reigning MVP June Mar Fajardo, gunner Marcio Lassiter, and playmakers Alex Cabagnot and Chris Ross.
The Beermen, who opened the conference with losses to KIA Carnival and Meralco Bolts, have showed their true form in their last three games by winning an average margin of 16.3 points against Rain or Shine, GlobalPort, and defending champion Star Hotshots.
“I am happy to see my players na ine-execute na nila yung mga plays namin. We’re on one direction. We’re all on the same page,” said Austria.
