AFTER falling short in the Philippine Cup, Barako Bull is looking forward to a more successful PBA Commissioner's Cup campaign after tapping former NBA D-League campaigner Devon Dwayne Chism as its import.
Listed at 6-9, the former University of Tennessee standout is coming off two overseas stints in Turkey in 2010 and just recently, in the Hungarian Basketball League.
The 245-pound Chism also played for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in the 2010-11 NBA D-League season, averaging modest numbers of 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 27 games.
Barako Bull assistant coach Koy Banal said they are taking in Chism because of the energy and solid inside presence he can provide to the team.
“Yung energy niya (Chism) saka yung malaking overseas experience niya, that will surely help us this conference. At the same, we hope he can give us the inside presence and rebounding presence na wala namin,” Banal told Spin.ph on Tuesday.
Chism is expected to play heavy minutes, now that Barako Bull has lost a legitimate power forward in Rico Maierhofer, who was traded on Tuesday to San Miguel Beer (formerly Petron) in exchange for Jason Deutchman and the Beermen’s 2016 and 2017 second round picks.
The wide-bodied Chism, who arrived on Monday, will be working alongside veteran big men led by Dorian Pena and Mick Pennisi.
Barako Bull has placed no higher than sixth in its last five conferences.
The Energy placed fourth during the 2012 Commissioner’s Cup behind last-minute import replacement Gabe Freeman, losing to Talk ‘N Text, 2-3 in the semifinals.
