OVERCONFIDENCE got the better of San Miguel in its 103-100 defeat to Blackwater on Wednesday in the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup, admitted import AZ Reid.
"We didn’t play the way we normally play, like the way we played in the first game. We played around, a lot of smiling, a lot of joking, so we lost," the veteran import rued.
San Miguel didn't look like the force of nature which walloped NLEX, 125-112 last Saturday, losing hold of a 10-point lead, 82-72 entering the fourth period.
“We stopped doing what got us the lead,” rued Reid, who finished with 26 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and two steals in the losing cause. “We started relaxing, chilling and thinking it’s funny, laughing and joking around. It’s unbelievable, man.”
“Blackwater played well. They made some good adjustments and double-teamed me in the second half the whole time. It worked well for them and they made shots that we didn’t.”
The loss sent the Beermen to an even 1-1 record and Reid rued it's not the mood you want entering a 16-day break. The team will next see action in a game against Columbian on September 21.
“It’s a very tough loss. We’ve got a long break and this game that we needed, we lost,” he said. “We just gotta regroup and hopefully, everyone take it serious next time. We gotta stay tough, mentally tough, get a lead and not fold, not break. We broke tonight, and it resulted in a loss.”
Ever the consummate leader, Reid was first to accept the blame.
“I’m the import, I take the blame, I’m used to it. I can handle it. Give it to me,” he said before giving a stern reminder to his fellow San Miguel teammates that they better get their act straight if they want to compete for the title later on in the season-ending conference.
“Like I said, I’m not playing no games. I’m not joking around.”
