AZ Reid hits last-gasp baseline jumper to lead Rain or Shine past San Mig in thriller

    Jun 16, 2014

AZ Reid hit a tough 20-foot baseline jumper with 1.1 seconds left to lead Rain or Shine past San Mig, 95-94, in a thriller marking the end of the PBA Governors Cup eliminations at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The game-winner capped a 39-point night for the pony-tailed Reid in a match Rain or Shine didn't really need to win, having been assured of a twice-to-beat edge in a match-up against Air21 in the quarterfinals.

By finishing with a 6-3 (win-loss) card, Rain or Shine now goes to the playoffs as the second seed and riding the crest of a five-game winning streak.

“This game didn’t feel like it’s a no-bearing game for the two teams,” said Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao. “We just wanted to get to the next round on a winning note. That’s why we tried to win this game.”

The biggest beneficiary of Rain or Shine's win was Alaska, which moved up to No. 3 in the standings to gain a twice-to-beat edge against Barangay Ginebra in their own quarterfinal playoff.

San Mig, which finished in a five-way tie at 5-4, ended up as the fourth seed with a twice-to-beat edge over San Miguel Beer which fell out of the twice-to-beat places after the Mixers loss.

The other quarterfinal pairing will have top seed Talk 'N Text going up against Barako Bull.

Reid's late heroics put to naught the heroics of San Mig new boys Ronnie Matias and Yousef Taha who kept the team in the fight when Tim Cone largely went to his bench in the second half.

Taha, who arrived in a trade with GlobalPort in exchange for Yancy De Ocampo, scored seven points while Ronnie Matias - a former Rain or Shine player - hit his first basket for San Mig with a tip-in of a Marqus Blakely miss on a fastbreak that gave the Mixers the lead, 94-93, with 3.3 seconds to go.

Reid, who also had nine rebounds and three assists, was able backed by Gabe Norwood who added 12 points while rookie big man Raymond Almazan added 10, six rebounds and two blocks.

Marc Pingris led the Mixers with 15 points while Blakely still finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds after being given enough time to rest in time for the tough grind in the playoffs.

    The scores:

    Rain or Shine 95 - Reid 39, Norwood 12, Almazan 10, Belga 8, Lee 7, Cruz 6, Chan 6, Teng 4, Arana 3, Uyloan 0, Tiu 0, Nuyles 0, Ibanes 0, Rodriguez 0.
